United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania
UWSWPA Website
The Challenge
United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania connects people and organizations to tackle pressing community needs. Its website, however, buried important information, underserved key audiences, and struggled to communicate the impact of its work.
Meanwhile, the local chapter was selected to pilot United Way Worldwide’s new identity — with our preliminary work beginning before brand guidelines were even available.
The Solution
I led two discovery sessions that brought together leadership from across United Way’s departments and disciplines. We identified audience needs, explored competing priorities, and established a shared direction for the redesign.
The outgoing site reflected United Way’s internal structure more than visitors’ needs. We overhauled the information architecture, replacing long, loosely organized pages with clear pathways to understand the issues, get involved, and find resources.
With no websites yet using the new identity, we interpreted the emerging global brand guidelines for an information-dense digital experience, developing a flexible system built around bold typography, color, and pattern.
Working within the new brand’s visual parameters, we developed original patterns that give individual sections distinct personalities while maintaining a cohesive identity.
Stories, data, and infographics make complex community challenges more tangible, helping visitors understand the issues, see the impact of United Way’s work, and recognize opportunities to contribute.
We also incorporated robust publishing tools, helping communications staff get the word out about United Way’s important work. Flexible formats for news, stories, and events make it easier to keep the site current without relying on external partners.
The Impact
The redesigned site brings United Way’s new global identity to life locally, balancing the chapter’s distinct voice with the strength of a worldwide network. The result is an inviting, useful platform for understanding community needs, finding help, giving, and volunteering.
